Until 2005, the building was used for the storage and cooling of butter, meat, poultry and fruit. It was then purchased by the municipality and left vacant, leading the building to deteriorate. Only in 2011, the city sold Het Koelhuis to Hoogeveen and Van Tilburg, provided they revive the building.
The necessary renovation of the building was made possible by loans from Triodos Cultuurfonds.
