While having been located there since 2006, it is part of a big optimalisation project of project developer E-Connection, the province of Zeeland, the municipalities of Veerle and Schouwen-Duiveland, Rijkswaterstaat and several nature preservation organisations with the aim to leverage the unique combination of wind-energy generation, nature, recreation and surge barrier. The existing windpark Neeltje Jans consists of 1 Vestas V90 wind turbine. The other 3 turbines were decommissioned and were replaced by bigger turbines, as part of windpark Neeltje Jans 2.
